A free face to face event covering symptom management and end of life care. The session will cover recognizing patients who are end of life, Advance Care Planning & difficult conversations, Spiritual Support, Symptom management and the Role of specialist palliative care on the Wirral.

Six Steps to Success in End of Life care

The Six Steps to Success programme is comprised of six face to face workshops. The aim is to enhance end of life care through facilitating organisational change and supporting and educating staff to develop their roles around end-of-life care. This course is suitable for any care home staff who support patients with chronic, advanced, or life-threatening conditions, typically 1-3 representatives per care home.

Symptom Management for Palliative Care

This in-depth course explores the effective management of key symptoms at the end of life, including pain, nausea and vomiting, respiratory secretions, and agitation. It equips Registered Nurses with the essential knowledge and skills to manage these symptoms appropriately, helping to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions.
The course also covers the recognition of palliative care emergencies and the registered nurse’s role in the initial intervention and management of:

• Hypercalcaemia
• Superior Vena Cava Obstruction
• Spinal Cord Compression

Target Audience: All Registered Nurses employed by Wirral Community Trust, or a Wirral-based Care Home

Lunchtime Education Session

A monthly education session covering a range of topics from specialists in Palliative and End of Life Care.

Topics covered at previous sessions are Clinically assisted hydration and nutrition: Shared decision-making in patients with life-limiting illness. Frailty and Wirral’s Vision. Substance Misuse and Palliative Care. Dementia. Enhanced Supportive Care.

MayFly Advance Care Planning and Communication Skills

The aim of this course is to enable staff to support patients to think about what they want to happen regarding their future care and treatment.

The course will illustrate the importance of, and implications of not, planning for the future.

It will also contrast the differences in planning for those with and without capacity

In-house End of Life Care Training

This two hour introductory course to End of Life Training explores the fundamental principles of End-of-Life care and the knowledge and skills that are needed to facilitate the best quality end of life care.   This course is suitable for all care home staff who support residents with chronic, advanced, or life-threatening conditions.

Syringe Driver Training

Our face to face practical session aims to teach you about the theoretical and practical skills required to use syringe drivers safely and effectively. We will discuss and practice the indications, setup, management, and the monitoring of a syringe driver in a safe environment. This course is suitable for all care home registered nurses and Senior healthcare workers who can second check.

No Conversation Too Tough - Ruth Strauss Foundation

Preparing children for parental death can be one of the most challenging experiences parents will face. Children who are given information and support when they need it, say they feel more included and better prepared for the death of their parents.

• Overview of young adult services based at Claire House
• Understand the nuances of Young People receiving Palliative Care
• 3 young people will be attending to provide lived experiences of Duchenne, and talk through their experience of advanced care planning.
