Best wishes to our Absolutely Amazing Anfield Abseilers

“Abseil, abseil, with hope in your heart,

And you’ll never abseil alone,

You’ll neeeeevvvvveeeeerrrrr abseil alone.”

Apologies to Rodgers and Hammerstein and this adaptation of their famous song from the musical, Carousel, which rings around Anfield, the home of Liverpool Football Club as their internationally renowned anthem, You’ll Never Walk Alone.

However, the rousing call to camaraderie and brave resilience may well inspire some high-class hospice heroes, staff, volunteers and supporters, who will stand ready, in harness, if not in harmony, ready to plunge 100 feet down Anfield Stadium’s main stand to raise funds for their cherished hospice.

All the action takes place on Sunday 23rd August, and here are all the players;

Alison and Annmarie:

Hospice occupational therapist, Alison, alongside colleague, our children and young person’s practitioner, Annmarie, have teamed up to go ‘over the top’ together.

As well as their crucially important day jobs, they’re both regular supporters of hospice fundraising.

Annmarie is often seen at hospice events and is always on hand at our annual lights switch on evening that commemorates people’s lost loved ones, Light up a Life, to support bereaved young people and other family members.

Alison completed a team triathlon with other hospice colleagues earlier this year and swam between two time zones in the Arctic circle last year to raise funds for the hospice.

So, they’ll both be taking a plunge of a different kind this year and you can support them at their Just Giving page linked here.

George, Sam and Lewis:

Clark Mortgages based in Chester and operating across the UK, including Wirral, chose our hospice as a charity partner in 2025 and 2026, helping sponsor various fundraisers and events. Thank You, again!

Senior mortgage adviser, Sam and new business manager, Lewis, abseiled the Liverpool Anglican cathedral for us in 2025, and they’ve now cajoled lending manager, George, for the Anfield abseil. They’ll all hope to be descending at the kind of manageable rate they would normally want to secure for their homebuyers

So the chaps who are usually trying to help their customers and commercial clients become upwardly mobile are themselves planning to be downwardly mobile at Anfield to raise some extra funds for Wirral Hospice St John’s.

Michaela:

Michaela with Sam and Summer

Michaela is bound to have a supportive cheer from family and friends as she passes Liverpool FC’s giant crest which features on the long descent from the roof of the stadium.

In memory of her lovely husband Kev, who was cared for at the hospice, she’s a frequent ‘flyer’, having already completed an Anglican cathedral abseil and the small matter of a 34,500 feet tandem skydive and raised some significant funds.

Molly and Jenni:

Molly is no stranger to hospice events. She was opted into supporting fundraising for the hospice from an early age as dad, Carl, is the hospice lottery manager.

She’s also pictured on the publicity material for this event as she was captured, looking surprisingly happy, while poised to take on a previous abseil for the hospice.

Now she’s ‘roped in’, literally, good friend, Jenni, to take her own leap of faith off of Anfield stadium.

Don’t worry Jenni, Molly will be there encouraging you all the way and you’ll never look back.

You’ll probably want to look forward and upwards though.

Suzi

Bromborough, Allport Road, and Heswall, Telegraph Road, is where you’ll normally find Suzi and Rachel, respectively, managing two of the hospice’s eleven charity shops.

Leading the volunteers and making sure their shops are busy dens of pre-loved, quality clothing, bric-a-brac, jewellery, small furniture and other everyday, and sometimes quirkier items.

Sorting, merchandising, pricing, window dressing, serving and replacing, in a never-ending pursuit of hospice retail funds is a busy job which requires constant concentration.

So, what better way to relax on a Sunday in August than standing 100 feet above the ground ready to take a giant leap for shop kind?

Stephen:

Steve and baby Evie

Steve is a massive supporter of his sister, Beth, a Wellbeing Centre nurse at the hospice, and is proud of the difference she, and all of her colleagues make to our patients lives.

He’s also a lifelong Red and may not have imagined, as he gazed at one of the biggest football stands in Europe being completed a few short years back, that he would be standing atop the edifice waiting to take a giant leap for hospice kind.

Steve’s married to Emma with a two-year-old daughter, Evie, and sister, Beth, says,

“He’s a real nice guy, and everyone’s friend.”
