Syringe Driver Training for Nursing Homes
Aim of Course:
The aim of this course is to give Nursing Home Registered Nurses the knowledge and skills required to use a Syringe Pump safely following current medical procedures.
- Understand the procedure in the event of patient death.
- Understand care and maintenance.
- Understand common problems and trouble shooting.
- Understand records management and monitoring.
Target Audience: Registered Nurses, CHAPS, Senior Carers

Attendance is limited to staff employed by A Wirral based care home.
Date & Time of Course: As per care home request
Duration: 90 Minutes
Course Content:
This hands-on session provides nurses and carers with the opportunity to set up and use a syringe driver, including a thorough explanation of relevant documentation.
Participants will learn to:
- Use the BD Bodyguard T device and understand its indications for use.
- Correctly set up and operate the device.
- Understand and apply accurate rate settings and infusion calculations.
- Follow appropriate procedures for commencing, monitoring, and stopping the infusion.
- Safely remove and dispose of the equipment according to best practice.
Please note: This session does not cover medications or dosage calculations.
Other Relevant Information:
The End of Life Care Team has 12 syringe drivers available for loan to nursing homes, so owning a syringe driver is not required to participate in this training.
Additionally, the team can provide support with second checking and observational practice to enhance learning.
