Building work at Wirral Hospice

Our next building project is refurbishing our main entrance, reception and cafe.

The building work will continue until end June, although sometime in July 2026 might be more realistic.

From Monday 27 April, our main reception will be closed – with a temporary reception set up to access our inpatient ward via bedroom 2.

Project Interiors are the contractors we have commissioned to carry out this work for us.

Background:

We have been carrying out refurbishments over the last few months to modernise and refresh our patient and family spaces.

This has all been thanks to additional government money that has been distributed to hospices around the UK to spend on building work and other improvements.

This is what we have been able to invest in so far, thanks to this extra funding:

  • Wellbeing Centre lounge and conservatory refurbishment
  • Inpatient lounge refurbishment
  • Family overnight room refurbishment (situated within our inpatient ward)
  • 2x electric cars (EVs) bought for our Hospice at Home team to visit patients
  • Solar panels installed and EV charger points for our Hospice at Home cars
  • Upgraded laptops (old laptops will be sold off to raise further income)
  • Laundry room refurbished, including new washing machines and dryers
  • Re-fit of our outpatients kitchenette

To ensure that our whole hospice building is fit for the short and longer-term future, we are also refurbishing our main entrance, reception space, and café:

  • The main entrance conservatory is very old with blown glass, so this will be replaced with new glass and a solid roof to ensure it can be used comfortably all year round.
  • The reception area will be freshened up to make the space as welcoming as possible for visitors.
  • The Quiet Space will be moved to the current doctors’ office (by the main reception desk) – this will make it much easier for patients and visitors to access to have a  peaceful moment of contemplation or prayer.
  • A new doctors’ office will be made by the patient & family support services team – still close to the ward but next to our multi-disciplinary professionals for enhanced working.
  • The café serving counter is being moved fully to the other side of the room, with a prep kitchen behind it (in the current Quiet Space), which will back onto the main kitchen – this will make preparing and serving hot food much easier for our catering team.
  • The seating areas in the cafe will have new tables and chairs, with a range of types of seating for patients and visitors that are comfy, stylish, and accessible.

Timings:

  • This central building work is due to start from Mon 9 March 2026
  • It is scheduled to take three months – there is a very detailed work plan!
  • The aim is to finish by the end of June 2026.

Funding this work:

  • Our board of trustees and senior leadership team have agreed that we will invest some of our hospice money into this important upgrade of the central area.
  • However, we are also submitting applications to charitable trusts and major funders to help us offset some of the costs.
  • We’re not launching a public fundraising appeal, as it’s important that our supporters’ donations continue to contribute towards our day-to-day care for our patients, their families and those important to them.
  • We do realise that sometimes people want to give to something that can be seen, so we have set up a JustGiving page for those that may like to give a donation towards building work, furniture and equipment.

Please visit www.justgiving.com/campaign/capitalcosts if you would like to contribute to this work, thank you.

Changes to access to our main hospice building:

  • There will naturally be some disruption to how people enter and exit parts of our building during this work, but we will have signposts in place and helpful volunteers to point you in the right direction.
  • We don’t anticipate any redirections being in place until May, but we will keep everyone informed.

 Changes to catering services:

  • Our main kitchen will not be affected by the building work, so meals for our inpatient ward will continue unaffected.
  • Our café will be closed from Wed 11 March 2026 during the building work.
  • However, we will continue to serve food to visitors, staff and volunteers directly from the kitchen. Please visit our Hub cafe page for more info.
  • Signs will be in place and flyers to explain how food can be ordered and paid for during the building work.

 Noise:

  • Quiet time on the ward will be protected so that between 3.30-4.30pm each day there will be no loud noises.

Temporary Quiet Space options when the current space becomes out of use:

  • During the main building works, other spaces will be designated Quiet Spaces:
    • Patients and visitors will have access to the family overnight room, which is on our inpatient unit.
    • Staff and volunteers who wish to use a space for contemplation or prayer can use the Time Out room on the first floor corridor.

Signs will be in place, and staff and volunteers will be briefed on where those temporary spaces are situated if there are any changes to the above.

Car parking:

  • For those who need accessible parking during the building works, we will do our best to accommodate patients’ visitors being able to park close to the main building.
  • Car park 3 (behind the fundraising building) will have lots of vans coming and going, which will belong to all the various trades involved in the building work.
  • Visitors who would sometimes park in car park 3 will be advised to try car park K; we can issue tickets for you to leave without paying the parking charge.
  • This is the same for staff who would usually park in car park 3, you will need to park in car park K or the overflow car park further around the site.
