Board of Trustees
The role of the Board of Trustees is to ensure delivery of the aims and objectives of Wirral Hospice St John’s.

Mr Steve Schroeder, Chair of Board of Trustees
Steve spent most of his working life with the BBC, moving from programme making into management for the latter 17 years prior to retirement.
His time is now taken up with a range of charitable work which draws on his management experience, and he tries to maintain his operational skills producing the occasional video, as well as sound and lighting work for amateur dramatics and a local folk group.
Steve joined Wirral Hospice as a Trustee in February 2015.
Mr Graham Ridgway, Treasurer / Chair of Finance & Infrastructure Governance Committee
Graham studied Accountancy at Sheffield University and then qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1982. He spent two years on secondment in South Africa before returning to Grant Thornton in Liverpool.
Graham joined Wirral Hospice as Treasurer / Trustee in February 1993.
Dr Hilary Leggat, Chair of Clinical Governance Committee
Hilary trained in St Andrews and Manchester qualifying in 1981. She obtained her MRCP and then entered higher specialist training in Haematology and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists. She was appointed as a Consultant Haematologist in 1995 and continued with this until retiring from Chester in 2017. Throughout her career she was a member of a number of regional and national medical committees.
Hilary joined the Board of Trustees in February 2018.
Dr Jean Quinn, Deputy Board Chair and Chair of Workforce Governance Committee
A former GP, Jean qualified MBChB in 1970 at Liverpool Medical School and remains a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners.
Previous roles include at the University of Liverpool Medical School where she was a Lecturer, Local Councillor with Wirral Borough Council, where she was Cabinet Member for Streetscene and Transport, and Non-Executive Director at Wirral University Teaching Hospital Foundation Trust.
Jean joined the Board of Trustees in February 2018.
Julie Wynne, Trustee
Julie has spent her career in finance. She is currently the Chief Finance Officer at EA Technology Ltd and is motivated to drive sustainable growth across the Group.
Julie is a Chartered Certified Accountant and holds a BA Honours degree in Accounting and Finance.
Julie joined Wirral Hospice St John’s as a Trustee in April 2020.
Mrs Lyn Meadows, Trustee
Lyn Meadows was the HR Director at Bangor University until her retirement. She has extensive experience in the public sector specifically managing change and fostering good employment relationships.
Since 2015, she has been an Independent Member of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and has taken an active role in the area of quality and safety.
Lyn has a Masters in Business Administration, a law degree and is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development.
Lyn joined the Board of Trustees in August 2019
Dr Roger Platt, Chair of Income Generation & Marketing Committee
Roger received a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Manchester and was a research fellow of Christ’s College Cambridge.
In 1971, he joined Unilever and, after spells in Holland, the United States and London, was appointed head of the Port Sunlight laboratory.
Following his retirement in 2004, he completed a PhD in Anglo-Soviet relations at the University of Liverpool and was also a non-executive director of a number of public sector organisations. He is currently a member of the Council of the University of Liverpool.
Roger joined Wirral Hospice St John’s as a Trustee in August 2019.
Mr Stephen Burrows DL, Chair of Investment Committee
Stephen joined the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1961, serving in various positions before moving to the bank’s Houston, Texas branch in 1975. Appointments held before returning back to the UK included Senior Vice President for the bank in New York and Executive Vice President (North America).
Stephen remained with the Royal Bank of Scotland in a number of senior UK positions until his retirement in 2001, when he joined Brabners LLP as Chairman and for whom he is now an Ambassador. He is a past Regional Chairman of Coutts in Merseyside and North Wales and is an Ambassador and past Chairman of Professional Liverpool.
Stephen is a Deputy Lieutenant in the Merseyside Lieutenancy and is a former High Sheriff of Merseyside. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the University of Liverpool Management School, a member of the Board of Regents at Liverpool Hope University and is an independent member of the Preliminary Investigation Committee of the International Cotton Association.
Stephen joined Wirral Hospice as a Trustee in July 2004.
Dr Murray Freeman, Trustee
Murray has lived and worked on the Wirral since 1977.
He was a GP in Tranmere and Rock Ferry for 36 years. He retired from Practice in 2019.
Apart from his GP role, Murray has had a wide range of NHS roles including:
- Cancer and Palliative Care lead NHS Wirral / Merseyside and Cheshire Cancer Network
- GP Trainer
- Chair Wirral Local Medical Committee
- Medical Director, Wirral Community Healthcare Trust
- Specialist Adviser Care Quality Commission
- Non-executive director Mersey Care NHS Trust (in post)
- Trustee Oak Trees Multi-Academy Trust (in post)
Murray has a long-standing interest in cancer care and palliative care. Qualifications; MBChB. MSc Primary Care.
Murray is a keen runner and walker. His hobbies include photography and choral singing.
Murray joined Wirral Hospice St John’s as a Trustee in May 2021.
