Roger has a deep well of academic and senior management expertise.
Roger has a deep well of academic and senior management expertise.
His early experience was as a natural scientist, with a BSc from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, a PhD in Chemistry from UMIST, Manchester, and a fellowship at Christ’s College Cambridge.
He joined Wirral’s historic manufacturing business, Unilever, in 1971.
Roger retired in 2004 having been head of the Port Sunlight laboratory and co-ordinating the work of other laboratories in Holland, USA, India and China, spending a lot of time in all of those far flung locations.
His public sector experience includes a secondment to the Foreign Office; the Chairmanship of the North West Science Council; and as a Non-Executive Director of the Ministry of Defence research laboratories (Dstl).
In retirement he has also undertaken research in History at the University of Liverpool, where he has completed a PhD in Anglo-Soviet relations after graduating with a Masters in twentieth century history. He has recently completed a term as a member of the Council of the University.
As Chair of our income generation and marketing committee his extensive management experience and insight helps guide future strategies in securing sustainable income for the hospice.
Roger lives on the Wirral and is an avid rugby league (St Helens) and football (Liverpool) fan, and plays enthusiastic, although, he says, “unskilled” golf.
Qualifications: BSc, PhD (Chemistry) and MA, PhD (History)
