Steve Schroeder: Chair of Trustees
Wirral born and bred, Steve spent over 30 years at the BBC after working as a cameraman and engineer in educational television.
He moved from an operational role into management for the latter 17 years, based predominantly at Manchester Oxford Road, running the extensive production facilities group, providing studio and outside broadcast facilities and crews to both radio and television programme makers.
After a spell in London running the BBC’s film unit he returned to Manchester to set up the host broadcaster coverage of the 2002 Commonwealth Games as operations director. His time as a senior manager coincided with the transition of the BBC to a more commercially focused organisation and the introduction of trading relationships for the services provided by the departments he managed.
On leaving the BBC he provided consultancy services for TV production companies covering international sporting events as well as becoming involved in charity work on a voluntary basis.
Steve joined the board of Wirral Hospice St John’s in 2015 and became Chair when previous incumbent, Dr Paul Cuthbertson, handed over the reins in 2018. Steve feels strongly that it is a privilege to serve the hospice in a position which draws on all of his management experience and he is both proud and humbled to have an association with such a well-regarded organisation.
Working with the senior leadership team and fellow trustees, Steve helps to steer the four tenets of our strategy: to expand reach of hospice services across Wirral; help secure sustainable income; to be an employer of choice; and to ensure the hospice is seen as an effective organisation that has our patients at the heart of everything we do.
He enjoys time with his wife, his son’s family and his grandchildren and is also involved in a range of other charitable and community work. Steve’s a keen follower of sport, having hung up his cricket gloves and, when he gets a chance, likes to play a round of golf.
