Excitement was in the air as around 200 hospice supporters gathered in their effervescent costumes and illuminous accessories to take part in the hospice twilight walk, Glow with the Flow.
Yes, on Friday 9th October, people were dancing at New Brighton’s Vale Park to the uplifting anthems from various Wirral chapters of Rock Choir, led by Rebecca, and then the pre-walk warm up with keep fit instructor, Gabby.

Hospice mascot, John Bear, dressed up for the occasion, receiving loud cheers as he danced on the bandstand joining Gabby inspiring everybody in an adrenalin pumping exercise routine.
By 6.30pm the walkers were raring to start on their 6km circular route, via New Brighton promenade, past Fort Perch Rock, along Kings Parade, onto the West Cheshire Sailing Club, and then back to Riverside Bowl.
After John Bear set everybody off, it was more than a bracing walk to the turnaround point with the wind fully blowing into the walkers’ faces. The going was genuinely tough and everyone, families with children, groups of friends of all ages, some with their dogs also braving the elements, ploughed on tenaciously through that wind, bursts of rain and a little sand blasting too.
Phew!
It was a welcome relief at halfway to receive an energy boost from burgers, tortilla chips, chocolate bars, fruit, teas and coffees provided by the Rapid Relief Team, a charity which provides free food services to good causes when putting on special events.
People were also delighted that the sailing club allowed them to use their superb clubhouse and café facilities for some respite before setting back towards the New Brighton Front.
As the tide was coming in, the road along Kings Parade was closed because of the anticipated swell and crashing waves so the walk continued a little further back on Coastal Drive behind the famous New Brighton Dips, with valuable volunteer marshals appeared on each corner to guide people on their merry way.
The return journey, being propelled by what was now a significant tailwind, seemed to take half the time of the outward one and people, despite the earlier challenge, reached the finish at Riverside Bowl on the New Brighton front in good spirits and the satisfaction of a job well done.
With completion certificate and a voucher for a future free game at Riverside, as well as their own kind contributions, alongside their supporters’ donations to the hospice in mind, everybody could genuinely say farewell with a warm glow in their hearts.
Here’s just a few, but many thanks to every single one of them.
