2023 Garden Project
Back in 2019, we gave our Wirral Hospice garden a full makeover. In 2023, our garden still looks beautiful from all that hard work a few years ago, but it’s ready for a bit of intensive love being put back in.

Our garden and outdoor space is incredibly important for our patients and their visitors to enjoy. They spend long periods of time looking out on to it or sitting in it, so it’s important for us to focus some time and energy to it this year to bring the sparkle back to it so they can enjoy it even more.

If you would like to volunteer your time on a regular basis or on an ad-hoc one over the coming months, we’d love to hear from you!

We have a range of garden tools for volunteers to use but if you’d like to bring your own (labelled) you might prefer to help out with your own bits and bobs. We will also provide drinks and light refreshments so it would be good to know numbers in advance so we can make enough cake!

If you’d like to come along on any of the above dates, please email Teresa at fundraising@wirralhospice.org.

If you are interested in becoming a regular gardening volunteer, please email Phil & Emma at volunteering@wirralhospice.org.

What did we do back in 2019?
Here are photos of Wirral Hospice’s Garden Makeover from 2019 here, including our very first National Garden Scheme (NGS) Open Garden weekend on Sat 29 & Sun 30 June 2019. It’s a Facebook album but you shouldn’t need a Facebook account to see the photos.

The overall aim was to have a more beautiful garden for our patients and their visitors to enjoy year round. What we previously had was small and very green / brown and well-kempt thanks to our lovely team of all-weather volunteers but not what anyone would describe as gorgeous. With a massive amount of help from the local community, what we have now is nothing short of astonishing!

How you helped us achieve our vision:
We asked for volunteers to help with the final weeding, scraping paths, dead heading before our grand opening on Sat 29 & Sun 30 June – and you came out in droves, bringing spades, hoes, rakes and brushes!

The Big Reveal we were working towards was us hosting our very own NGS Open Garden weekend on Sat 29 & Sun 30 June 2019. See also, more photos by Mike McTigue of Wirral Hospice’s NGS Open Garden on Sat 29 June 2019.

Our garden continued to evolve with integration of plants and structures we were gifted from the BBC North West Tonight Sunshine Garden in memory of Dianne Oxberry.

Thank you so much to the following for helping us to create our vision of a lovelier garden for our patients and their visitors:
Wirral Hospice’s volunteers | Ellis Family | Greenway Family | Lees Family | Aspire Care Support Services | Barclays | Cheshire Freemasons | Charles Stephens | Heswall Round Table | Scouts & Beavers | Unilever | Vitaflow | Wirral Belles WI | & to anyone else who donated money and things we needed
