Starter for 10 (2 x 5 marathons!) Mike Ng keeps on running in memory of his dad Yick Mo

Published on: 09/04/2026

Mike Ng ran the small matter of FIVE marathons for Wirral Hospice St John’s in 2025.

Wait, WHAT?

I know but, guess what? In 2026, he’s running FIVE more, including the London Marathon on Sunday 26th April.

Simply, incredible!

Yes, Mike made the commitment in memory of his beloved Dad, Yick Mo, who passed away at the hospice in March 2025, after Yick and the family had previously received our Hospice at Home sitting service.

Mike told us,

“Dad was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in September 2024 which was naturally very challenging for him and for our mum, Iris, my brother and two sisters’ families as well as myself and my wife Nicky and our sons, Ben and Jacob.

The hospice team who visited dad at home were so lovely and when it came time to be admitted to the hospice the ward nurses, health care assistants and all the support staff and volunteers were just so attentive and caring.

The hospice was a real lifeline for us. It really allowed us to be a family again and just ‘be’ with dad at an incredibly important time of his life.

Mum and Dad had run The New Sunrise Restaurant in Birkenhead for over 40 years and he was only in the hospice in-patients ward for the last three days of his life. However, he passed away peacefully at the hospice and we’re forever grateful for the compassion and support that was shown to us all.”

Mike finds his therapy in running and it’s also a way to promote and raise funds for the hospice he and his whole family have such fond regard for.

“I’d run a couple of marathons before, but dad’s passing gave me real focus.

In Cantonese the word ńg means ‘five’ so I just thought it was fitting that I should attempt five marathons in a year in honour of him.

So last year I managed to get entry for and then complete marathons in Paris, Manchester, Edinburgh, Berlin and Amsterdam.”

Wow, Mike!

This year I’ve got a couple of warm up marathons, before London”

Warm up?

“Brighton on Sunday 12th April, then Manchester on 19th before heading to London for the 26th, April.”

As Mike relays this you can’t help but smile and think, goodness me!

He says it really humbly and then goes on to add,

“On bank holiday Monday, 4th May, I’ll be in Milton Keynes for their marathon, before taking a bit of a break and adding Sydney, during our family holiday, on Sunday, 30th August.”

That’s four marathons in four weeks before the trip to Sydney, Australia?

MIND… BLOWING..!

Mike has raised nearly £4,000 for the hospice, this year and last, which is a tremendous amount.

We’re incredibly grateful Mike. Please know you have the very best wishes of everyone associated with Wirral Hospice St John’s and, staying on the number five theme, think of the boy band, 5, and their famous hit song, Keep on Movin’!

It mentions ‘four in four weeks’ which we know is incredible but we also know he’s got the fifth one planned for later in the year! Go, Mike!
