Symptom Management for Palliative Care

Course Aims:

This course will provide registered nurses with the underpinning knowledge and skills to:

  • Explore the principles of Palliative Care and what encompasses a holistic needs assessment, including physical, psychological, social and spiritual aspects.
  • Look at the non-pharmacological and pharmacological management of breathlessness.
  • Competently carry out a pain assessment and develop an understanding of the medications commonly used in palliative care.
  • Discuss common factors and assessment of anorexia in palliative care patients.
  • Explore the non-pharmacological and pharmacological management of nausea/vomiting and constipation.
  • Understand the symptoms and management of palliative care emergencies.
  • Manage symptoms for patients in their last days of life, including the use of continuous subcutaneous infusions.
  • How to access support and advice from CSPCT/WHSJ advice line.

  • Wirral Care Homes
