Breaking bread together, is an act as old as time that unites people from all backgrounds in all parts of the world. Whether you get your loaf from a special baker, or the local supermarket, bread plays an integral part in most of our lives.
Toast, sandwiches, chip butties, wholemeal, multigrain, white tin, sourdough, multigrain or, ciabatta with olive oil and balsamic before a nice meal.
Hmmm, mouth watering!
And, don’t get us started on the correct name for cobs, batches, brioche, barms, baps and buns!
So, when our corporate and events manager, Jo, met graphic designer, Scott, from LT Print in Wallasey, at a networking event, he surprised her by saying he would take on the hospice’s £50 challenge by sourcing the ingredients for baking bread and asking family, friends and colleagues to make a kind donation in exchange for what he assured her were top quality baked products.
Scott describes himself as a ‘big foodie’ and he’s enjoyed cooking and baking for quite a long time now.

Scott receives his ‘Rising Star’ award from hospice CEO Helen
He honed his skills during the Covid lockdowns when we all had a little more time. Scott told us
“I love it. I find the time I spend in the kitchen preparing and baking is really relaxing.
I’ve baked many different breads and pastries, baguettes, sourdoughs, pain au chocolat, croissant, all kinds really.
I’ve got my pasta machine where I can roll out pasta and Pasta Fazool is my go-to Italian dish.
My favourite bread is focaccia. Add some rosemary, rock salt, olive and/or chilli oil and cheese and it is a taste sensation.”
Scott has prepared a couple of recipes and cooking instructions at this link.
He continues,
“During last year’s £50 challenge I managed to bake around 250 focaccias.
I think I got a little bit of tendonitis in my right wrist with all the kneading which was no good for my golf.”
Scott laughs, it’s infectious and you can’t help but laugh too. Seasoned golfers might have a little sympathy as Scott plays off two! (A proper golfer. If you know, you know).

“My wife, Zoe, is my motivator while the children, Amelia, Adam and Amber, are the taste testers. If I can pass the challenge and they demolish the focaccia then I know other people might be good enough to make a donation to the hospice for it.
I set a target in 2025 of £1,000 and was delighted to do quite a bit more. Once people know they’re donating to Wirral Hospice St John’s they really do like to help.
In 2026 I’ll be giving it another go.”
Winning the ‘Rising Star Award’ last year (Rising – haha!), Scott is our Wirral born and bread self-taught baker and he’ll be looking to prove himself, and his focaccia, again in 2026.
We’re so grateful for his kind support and wish him all the very best for this year’s £50 challenge.
Thank you again, Scott. We simply can’t wait to taste the goodies!
