Very pleased to tell you that our Hospice sailed through recent unannounced #CQC health watchdog inspection

Green Check MarkOn Fri 18 Jan 2013, Wirral Hospice St John’s received its second unannounced Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection visit in just 11 months. The CQC is the national health watchdog that regulates and assesses whether hospitals, care homes and care services meet essential standards in safety and quality.

The Hospice was measured against five of the CQC’s 16 essential standards of care:

  • Consent to care and treatment
  • Care and welfare of people who use services
  • Safeguarding people who use the service from abuse
  • Staffing and
  • Complaints

Rigorous interviews with patients, families and staff took place across the day to ensure that the CQC had all the information it needed to compile its report on how the Hospice cares for and treats patients, and the support systems we have in place to ensure that our staff have undertaken higher specialist training in palliative care.

All five aspects that the Hospice was assessed against met the required standards the CQC were looking for with no recommendations for improvements, which is the highest rating an organisation can receive. The Hospice also met all the standards at the previous inspection in Feb 2012, so patients and their families and carers can be very reassured that the quality of care given at Wirral Hospice St John’s is to a consistently highest standard.

Dawn Porter, Clinical Services Manager, said: “We are once again delighted with the outcome from the Care Quality Commission’s inspection report It highlights staff dedication and quality of service we provide in caring for patients, carers and families. It reflects the whole organisation’s commitment to patient care, including nursing staff, medical practitioners and allied professionals, to the catering, house-keeping and facilities teams through to administration, fundraising and finance teams, and our dedicated team of more than 460 volunteers.”

In June 2013, we will commence celebrating our 30th Anniversary of caring for the people of the Wirral so the feedback from the CQC inspection is pleasing news to share with everyone.
