Symptom Management for Palliative Care

Course Aims:

This course will provide registered nurses with the underpinning knowledge and skills to:

  • Carry out a holistic assessment for palliative care patients with symptoms of breathlessness, pain, constipation, anorexia, weight loss, nausea and vomiting and intestinal obstruction
  • Formulate an appropriate management plan in clinical practice and when and how to seek specialist service advice/support.
  • To recognise the signs and symptoms of palliative care emergencies and registered nurses’ role in initial intervention and management of Hypercalcaemia, Superior Vena Cava Obstruction and Spinal Cord Compression,
  • When and how to seek specialist service advice/support
  • Manage Pain, Nausea and Vomiting, Respiratory Secretions and Agitation at End of Life
  • Use of Pharmacological and Non-Pharmacological interventions:
    • including use of Oral and Continuous Subcutaneous Infusion and subcutaneous medications associated conversions/indications/combinations/contraindications/diluents/NPSA alerts
  • Manage symptoms appropriately to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions
