Philosophy of Care
The aim of Wirral Hospice St John's is to warmly welcome people with progressive illness, which has failed to respond to curative treatment, into the quiet calm of a highly professional caring atmosphere, which comforts always both them and those who are important to them.
Cheque from the Mayor
Hayley Dykes was delighted to collect a cheque from The Mayor of Wirral Councillor Moira McLaughlin for Wirral Hospice St John’s. A total of 33 charities benefitted from the hard work put in by The Mayor and Mayoress and the Town Hall Team led by Sue Carroll, PA to The Mayor.
Hayley says “ This has been a fantastic year to be selected by the Mayor. They have both worked so hard to make a difference to Wirral charities and I am delighted with the cheque which will help us care for more Wirral patients. Thank you.”

Make A Will Month - May 2012
Following the success of our Make a Will Month last year we are delighted that local solicitors have joined us again making wills in return for a donation to Wirral Hospice St John’s.
Lesley Woodhead, Fundraising and Marketing Manager says “ Having a will means your wishes are carried out and family members know what you want to happen and it is often a comfort to family members to be able to carry out loved ones wishes. As a charity we are very grateful for all the legacies that we are left and they help us to continue to care for our patients and their families”

Care Quality Commission Report
Wirral Hospice received an unannounced inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) on Thursday 23 February 2012. This inspection was conducted by the CQC’s Inspecting Officers as part of their routine reviews of healthcare establishments.
The Inspectors reviewed all the information and arrangements we have in place to better understand the care, treatment and support that is available to our patients, carers and families, and to ensure that the systems we have in place support the choices available to those we care for. They also observed how patients, carers and families were being cared for and talked to staff and to other people who use our services.
The judgment from the CQC was that Wirral Hospice is compliant against all the CQC Standards that we were assessed against. This means that people who use the services of Wirral Hospice are experiencing the outcomes relating to essential standards.
The Chairman, Board of Trustees, Senior Managers and I are delighted with the report and wish to thank all staff and volunteers for there ongoing commitment and support in ensuring that the excellent standards of care that we are proud of are maintained for all our patients, carers and visitors to Wirral Hospice St Johns.

The Hospice Needs a New Kitchen ....
Recent refurbishment left the hospice with great new facilities for our patients and our new hub café, part of our last year, has been a great success!
Lesley Woodhead, Fundraising and Marketing Manager says
I was enjoying a morning coffee a couple of weeks ago and saw the delighted look on the faces of two visitors when they saw that their husband and dad respectively, was out of bed and waiting for them in the café to treat them to a cappuccino!
Additionally, the café is also providing a place for families to eat away from the bedside and for families to meet following bereavement when plans have to be made.
However, the good news does have a downside in that our kitchen is no longer able to cope. It was installed over 20 years ago when things here at the hospice were very different and with modern medical developments and half our in patients going home, food plays an important part in patient quality of life.
We are asking supporters who are always so generous to the hospice in support of Light up a Life at Christmas to make a small donation towards our kitchen refurbishment costs. We are aiming to raise £40,000 to so this. If you are able to donate please complete this from and send it to fundraising. We have also set up a Just Giving page to raise funds for the kitchen –
http://www.justgiving.com/wirralhospicekitchenfund
If everyone sends a little we will have a kitchen “fit for purpose” in no time- providing an absolute necessity for our patients, staff and visitors alike.
